Story/synopsis
”Var svensk” is the stories about folk dancer MirzaJelacic and hip hopper ZdenkoPrgomet show two faces of the Bosnian Diaspora in Malmö.
Newly graduated, Mirza is being waved goodbye at Malmö Central Station by his family. He leaves to do the military service as he considers himself to be in debt to Sweden. Zdenko, on the other hand, has had a rough past in Sweden. But, he is now determined to ‘make it’ in Bosnia as a hip hop artist and he goes there to perform at a big festival called Unity Party.
Later, Mirza returns home from the regiment and tells his parents that he wants to go to Bosnia as a UN soldier in order to bring democracy to the country. Meanwhile, in an interview at Radio Sarajevo, Zdenko is confronted and starts to reconsider his Bosnian identity. And while sightseeing in the old part of Sarajevo, he suddenly realises that he is a tourist in his own home country.
In a way, Mirza and Zdenko are each other’s opposite poles. In another way, they have a crucial thing in common; the longing for the Bosnia they once knew to be their home and the uncertainty in being Swedish, Bosnian, both or none.
Biography main character
Zdenko Prgomet Born .... (25 years old)
Zdenko Prgomet is the main singer in the Bosnian hip hop group Amon Ra. He came to Sweden from a little Bosnian town called Derventa. He has been making music ever since a man in the refugee camp taught him to play the keyboard. As a teenager he had a rough time in Sweden and most of the songs deal with “gangster life”.
Today he is living in Malmö, works as a computer engineer and devotes all his free time and energy to the music. He makes his music for the young people in Bosnia and goes there to perform, hoping to “make it”.
Mirza Jelacic, born .... ( 20 years old)
Mirza has lived in Bosnia for ten years and in Sweden for ten years. On his free time he dances Bosnian folk dance. After he graduated from St:Petri gymnasium with fine grades he joined the military service in Sweden.
His reason for going into the military is not patriotism, he has two reasons. First, he has heard the old men in Bosnia romanticise about their experiences of their military service. Secondly, he feels that he owes Sweden something and by joining the army he feels like he is giving something back.
During his service he decides that he wants to serve as a UN-soldier in Kosovo.
