Against this background of practice, the research problem the Shadowplay project
will address is the creation of a conceptual foundation and vocabulary to
express the possibilities of game illumination, and to specify how lighting
techniques can be applied within game design As we have seen, lighting a game
exists as a special competency within the workflow of the games industry.
Although design principles have been generated for the lighting of
computer-generated animation (Callahan, 1999), no such effort has been made for
game design.
